The River Returns

Painted in early November 2020. We were blessed with some fine bright weather, transitory and precious. A college bridge became more symbolic, and the light more important.
This series of work was done in my studio with oil paint on canvas from quick small sketches and photographs taken at times with cold shuddering fingers. In the end these efforts were not the primary source for this sequence, despite being site-specific. The everyday, enforced familiarity had to be fused with the feelings that are translated in paint. Walking through the familiar everyday brought these to life – in sorrow and loss, with a hint of hope.
